VASTU GUIDELINES FOR GARDEN PLANTS AND TREES

People like to have a garden in the front and back of the house depending on availability of space. Vastu Shastra provides logical, scientific explanation for every guideline. It is up to the individual to decide what to follow or not.

WHAT TREES TO PLANT IN THE HOUSE GARDEN?

Find below brief of some of the auspicious trees and their usefulness.

Banana Tree

BANANA TREE

Saplings of the banana tree are used for decorating doors of houses, pandals etc., on various occasions as they symbolize prosperity and wealth. Almost every part has some economic or medicinal use. Banana fruit is the good source for instant energy and are rich in potassium & minerals. Raw bananas are cooked like a vegetable. The fruit skin is used in dyeing. Various treatments can be done with concoctions made from its roots, stem, flowers, and leaves.

Must have for house garden.

Coconut Tree

COCONUT TREE

Each & every part of this tree is useful. Coconut water is healthy, mineral drink. The coconut flesh is used for cooking because of its distinctive flavor. Coconut oil is used in cooking and as hair oil. Coir, a by-product is used for mats, carpets etc. The leaves are weaved as roofing for huts, dry leaves as fire-wood. Due to its versality, it is considered a sacred tree.

Must have for garden.

Jackfruit Tree

Like the mango, jack-fruit tree also produces tasty, seasonal, fruits. Jack-fruit’s seeds are also nutritious and used as a vegetable in South India. The yellow juicy kernels of jackfruit are used for different types of sweets. Yellow colored wood is used to make furniture, doors, windows etc. Its leaves are considered auspicious and are used for puja.

Therefore, it is useful and can be planted in your garden.

Mango Tree

MANGO TREE

Like Neem, Mango trees have multiple utility. Its leaves are used for puja purposes and hence considered very auspicious. Its branches used in pooja Yagna & even in cremation. Additionally, mango fruit is the king of fruits. Even raw mangoes are used for pickles and as vegetable. Mango trees also have a long life.

Hence, it will be very useful tree to have in your garden.

Neem Tree

Azadirachta indica, commonly known as neem, is native to the Indian subcontinent. Neem tree has great medicinal value, Its twigs/small branches as brush teeth, neem oil for multiple purposes and its extract in pesticides.

Therefore, this is a good tree to have in a house garden.

Peepal Tree

PEEPAL TREE

Also known as the Aswatha tree, peepal tree produces large amount of oxygen as per scientific findings. Therefore, it is healthy to circumambulate this tree and prohibited to cut it. However, because of its far spreading roots which can affect the walls, foundation of the building, it should be avoided next to house building.

Sandalwood Tree

CREEPERS

Climbers (creepers) is a group of plants or vines which need some kind of support to grow. These should not be grown using the building or compound wall as a support as they slowly creep into tiny cracks leading to water seepage. Creepers should only be grown in a garden, and with their own independent supports. A creeper like a money plant can be grown within the house but should not be grown outside, using a tree for support.

Flower pots should not be kept on the compound wall in the North, East or North-East as they will block the useful morning sunlight. They can be placed on the ground in these directions, but they should not grow taller than 3 feet.

JASMINE

Sweet smelling flowering plants like jasmine, lotus, etc.  give out a pleasant perfume, and flowers used in worship, decoration on the hair by Indian ladies. These flowers are produced round the year and are always available.

Thorny Plants

THORNY PLANTS

Thorny plants (except roses) should not be planted near the house as they have a negative energy. Cactus should not be planted at all. Ideally, they should be pulled out and destroyed. Thorns can hurt you when you brush past them.

TULASI, TULSI (BASIL)

Osmium tenuiflorum, commonly known as holy basil, Tulsa or tulsi, is an aromatic perennial plant. It is always good to grow a Tulsi plant on one’s property in the North, North-East, or East sides of the house, or in front of the house. Tulsi is extensively used in Ayurvedic medicines as it purifies the blood, improves the digestive system and many types of diseases. Hence considered a sacred plant and used in daily worship.

Tulsi (Basil)

North, North-east or East direction

Grow Tulsi on each side of a pathway from the main gate to the entrance of house.

Creepers

The exteriors of a building

Creepers in the garden must have their own support & not use compound wall or building for support.

Fruit Bearing trees

East

Flower bearing plants (Jasmine, Rose and Marigold)

South-West

Avoid thorny plants (except Rose). One can, grow Jasmine on each side of a pathway from the main gate to the entrance of a house.

 

Large trees like Peepal, Banyan should away from the house as their roots can damage the foundation and compound wall & block most of the sunlight (positive energy).

Good useful trees that can be planted are coconut, neem, betel, sandalwood, lemon, pineapple, banana, almond, jackfruit, pomegranate, mango, amla, and Katha.

Avoid trees with insects, worms, honey bees, owls, serpents. If a tree has to be removed because it is inauspicious or for other reasons, one should express regret to the tree a day before cutting the tree and it must be removed including its roots. Plant a new tree in its place within the next three months to conserve nature.

LAWNS AND SWIMMING POOL (WATER BODIES)

Lawns should be in the East or the North direction. A small water-fall of three to four feet or a water body can be constructed in the East or the North leaving the North-East corner. If there is a swimming pool in the garden, it should be in the North or North-East direction, to benefit from the sun rays.
