Naturopathy

Modern day Naturopathy

Naturopath’s role is empowering the patient to take responsibility for his or her own health. This is not always an easy task amid a hostile environment of toxins and chemicals.

Most of us now live in a sea of electromagnetic pollution, coupled with a plethora of chemical pollutants which were unknown to man 50 years ago. Add to this food with preservatives, fast-tracked by technology and we have a heady mix of health problems waiting to happen.

In nutshell, most people have too much of what they shouldn’t have and not enough of what they should have in their bodies. The Naturopath of today needs a clear approach to meet these challenges and guide their patients back to good health.

Who is a Naturopath?

A Naturopath is a health practitioner who uses natural therapies. Her/his spectrum comprises far more than fasting, diet, water, and exercise;

In current times of  modern technology, environmental pollution, poor lifestyle, and stress play a significant role in the degradation of health, a Naturopath’s ability to apply natural methods of healing can be of considerable importance.

Often, a Naturopath is the last resort in a patient’s search for health. Providing personalised care to each patient, the naturopath sees a holistic unity of body, mind, and spirit.

Using a range of alternative methods for diagnosis, a Naturopath can often successfully pin-point problems in the body, before the onset of acute disease, and treat the patient with specific therapies and suggest changes  in the patient’s lifestyle.

It views the whole person in regards to finding a cause of disease, and uses the laws of nature for cure as its principles.

  • The healing power of nature – nature has the innate ability to heal
  • Identify and treat the cause – there is always an underlying cause, be it physical or emotional
  • Do no harm – a Naturopath will never use treatments that may create other conditions
  • Treat the whole person – when preparing a treatment plan, all aspects of a person’s being are taken into consideration
  • The Naturopath as a teacher – a Naturopath empowers the patient to take responsibility for his/her own health by teaching self-care
  • Prevention is better than cure – a Naturopath may remove toxic substances and situations from a patient’s lifestyle to prevent the onset of further disease

Man is part of nature and the universe, and health is achieved by living in accordance with this principle. Harmony is fostered with proper nutrition, water treatments, rest, sunshine and fasting. Medicine, religion and science are intimately related and man is seen as a whole – a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual being.

The same vital force or chi (qi) that made up the universe and nature flows through man and it is this dislocation from this source that caused illness. Naturopaths work on principle that if you restore the vital force to the patient, the body would naturally heal itself.

Treatment Plans

Naturopathic doctors design treatment plans to suit individual needs and health conditions.

Most treatments include changes in food and nutrition. A diet plan will typically use whole foods, for example, fruit, vegetables, lean meat, and whole grains with advice on maximizing nutritional value by eating seasonal, local food. Many believe food is better for the body when consumed raw, rather than cooked.

Treatments a naturopathic doctor may include:

  • diet and nutrition recommendations
  • behavioral change, as exercise and lifestyle
  • hydrotherapy, which is water-based treatment
  • manipulative therapy, which uses putting pressure on certain parts of the body to establish balance
  • herbal supplements
  • detoxification

What does a treatment consist of ?

An initial consultation with a Naturopath normally takes over 30 minutes. During this time the Naturopath asks questions about the person’s condition, medical history, diet, lifestyle, and any conventional treatments that they may be taking. The consulting Naturopath may then use Iridology (looking into the iris), or tongue and nail diagnosis to get a better picture of the complete health state. If needed, pathology testing for hair, stool, or blood analysis may be recommended.

Once all of the information is gathered, a treatment plan is formulated. The treatment plan may include advice on diet, lifestyle, exercise, herbal medicine, homeopathic treatments, or other suitable remedies.
